The Thames bawley Saxonia offers groups of up to 8 people the rare opportunity of a day aboard a traditional sailing smack in her native Essex waters - a remote region of mud-flats and salt marshes - home to thousands of native and migrating marsh birds.

The Saxonia  makes an ideal venue for family re-unions, anniversaries, office parties, client entertainment, educational trips, ‘hands-on’ sailing  - or simply for an unforgettable day afloat on the beautiful rivers Colne and Blackwater.

Smacks, bawleys and sailing barges form part of the East coast maritime heritage.  The Saxonia is typical of her class.

Both above and below decks she retains her original working features with a cosy cabin and wood-fired stove providing a welcome retreat on colder days.

You can take an active part in sailing the Saxonia – setting and stowing the sails, steering, navigating and generally learning the tricks of sailing a very traditional fishing smack -or simply sit back and absorb the atmosphere of a slower, bygone era as you watch the coastline slip past.
